VINTAGE Australian BOXING Movie poster c.1945 Vic Patrick v. Fred Dawson

Vic Patrick v. Fred Dawson c.1947
This very rare original Australian movie poster was originally printed for film of the Vic Patrick versus Bos Murphy fight in New Zealand. Murphy triumphed over Patrick in a hard fought bout. Patrick went on to fight the Chicago boxer, Freddie Dawson, in Australia. Although, Patrick was ahead on points early in the fight, Dawson proved too strong and Vic Patrick went out for the count in the 12th round. Many who watched the bout contend that referee Joe Wallis should have stopped the fight before Vic Patrick was knocked out and the surviving video certainly supports that.
The poster is in fair condition. The borders appear to have been trimmed. There are tears throughout the poster with tape on the back and some paper loss but the image area is primarily intact. The original reference to Bos Murphy has been overpainted with Fred Dawson's name and arrows have also been overpainted pointing to a snipe in the center of the poster (see enlarged scan). The artist was Frank Tyler, who produced the artwork for many Australian movie posters from the era. Although he rarely signed his work, his signature appears on this poster to the lower left.
This is an important piece of Boxing memorabilia. Only a small number of posters would have been printed for this film which would have been shown as a short before the main feature. The poster has the added significance of being used for two Vic Patrick fights. It is likely that no posters were actually printed for the Fred Dawson fight and that is why the Bos Murphy poster was used for this feature.
