This poster comes from a collection of Movietone News movie posters recently discovered in Victoria. The posters range from 1950s – 1960s and are very rare. They are form an important historical record of the major news stories of the era. Condition varies on the posters as they were not stored with care but linen backing would address any issues that they may have.

This Movietone News poster highlights the first Ashes Test in 1954 and is an important piece of cricket Memorabilia.
Australia won by an innings and 154 runs
Brisbane Cricket Ground, Woolloongabba, Australia
Umpires: C. Hoy (AUS) & M.J. McInnes (AUS)

Australia won by an innings and 154 runs to take a 1–0 lead in the series. The papers unanimously criticised Hutton's decision to send Australia in to bat, though they noted he would have done better if England had held onto its chances in the field.

John Arlott wrote that neither Len Hutton or Alec Bedser had produced a "larger than life" performance to rescue England. Only once before had a team come from behind to win in Australia, in 1911–12 when the great Sydney Barnes had rescued the side after his captain's mistakes in the First Test. Ian Johnson had more than confirmed his place as Australian captain, even though it was "only" the biggest Australian victory over England since they won by an innings and 332 runs in the First Test on the same ground in 1946–47.

Movietone News Australia

20th Century Fox Movietone News was an important part of Australian cinema from the 1930s - the 1960s. The newsreels provided a snapshot of the major stories of the day, both international and local, and were screened before the main feature movie. Jack Davey often provided the fast paced narration.

Stock posters were used with the stories added for each newsreel. Sadly, only a very small number of Movietone News movie posters have survived. From the 1930s to the mid-late 1950s, the Fox posters featured the trademark kookaburras and some of the posters were designed by Oz Bates. From the late 50s to early 60s the posters featured a collage of the type of stories likely to be seen in the newsreels, including sport, important ceremonial events, politics and general news.

The advent of television in Australia led to the redundancy of Movietone News as watching  televised news stories became a part of life for Australian families.
