Barbie is a fantasy comedy film from a screenplay Greta Gerwig wrote with Noah Baumbach. The film is based on the eponymous fashion dolls by Mattel and the first live-action Barbie film after numerous animated films and specials. It follows Barbie and Ken on a journey of self-discovery through both Barbieland and the real world following an existential crisis. It also serves as a commentary onpatriarchy and the effects of feminism.

The world premiere of Barbie was held with much fanfare at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on July 9, 2023. The European premiere followed at Cineworld Leicester Square in London on July 12, 2023. It was released theatrically in the United States and the United Kingdom soon after on July 21, 2023.

Ryan Gosling apparently accepted the role of Ken after seeing his daughter’s Ken doll lying face down in the mud next to a squashed lemon. He then took a photo of the doll and lemon and sent it to Greta Gerwig with a note saying, “I shall be your Ken, his story must be told.”

Margot Robbie thought that Barbie gradually morphes from doll to human over the course of the film. When she declares her intention to become human to Ruth Handler, the transformation is complete. This evolution is depicted in subtle changes to her hairstyle, makeup, body language and voice becoming more and more natural. Her clothing design becomes more random and less stylized.

Despite multiple nominations, Barbie just picked up one Oscar at the 2023 Academy Awards for Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures (Original Song) and performed by Billie Eilish.

Original Movie Posters for Barbie are highly sought after and three different double sided posters were issued for the original release of the film in Australia. Barbie Movie Posters are now very hard to find in excellent condition. The most sought after of the three is the version that shows Barbie and Ken in the car.
